911 center's employee jailed for DUI

An employee of the 911 dispatch center in Georgia's Rabun County was being held in the Stephens County Jail for multiple driving offenses. According to a spokesperson for the center, the driver was employed as a CAD technician.

The man was placed under arrest for driving under the influence after crashing his truck in Stephens County. His young son was inside of the truck at the time of the crash. Additional charges include failing to maintain lane and the endangerment of a child under the age of 14.

On April 14, 2017, deputies responded to reports of a vehicle crash on Georgia State Route 45. The driver's truck had allegedly veered off of the road, moved across the center line and collided into the wood line off the left shoulder of the road. The deputies on the scene reported that the driver appeared to be impaired and uncertain about how old he and his son were. The deputies also observed a Fentanyl patch on the driver's right arm and that the driver was shaky, perspiring and moving around anxiously.

A search was conducted of the vehicle, and the deputies discovered the driver's prescription pill bottle of Tramadol and a 380 semi-automatic handgun. Also taken from the vehicle was another empty bottle. The incident is being reviewed internally at the Rabun county emergency facility.

Drivers who have been charged with operating under the influence face significant penalties if a conviction is obtained. Accordingly, it can be advisable to meet with a defense attorney as soon as possible to see how the allegations can be refuted. One potential strategy could be to challenge the traffic stop itself as not being made with the requisite reasonable suspicion.
