Elijah Holyfield charged with marijuana offense

College football fans might be interested in learning that Elijah Holyfield, the University of Georgia running back and the son of Evander Holyfield, has been charged with possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The incident happened in the early morning hours of May 1.

Sources report that Holyfield was charged with possessing less than an ounce of marijuana along with drug paraphernalia. He was taken into custody for the offenses. Under the university's policy, people who are convicted of marijuana offenses are suspended for one game.

In addition to the potential one-game suspension, Holyfield may also face criminal penalties if he is convicted. Holyfield was recruited for the 2016 class from Atlanta's Woodbury Academy. While he is rated as the 18th-best player in the state, he didn't get much playing time on the field during the fall season because of the crowded roster. A conviction on his pending misdemeanor charges may keep him off of the field for a longer period of time.

Drug charges may result in serious consequences for people who are convicted of them. Drug convictions may lead to prison time, probation, fines and other penalties. They also may result in collateral consequences such as trouble finding jobs, housing and employment. Students who are convicted of drug offenses may also be unable to secure educational loans to pay for college. People who are charged with drug crimes might benefit by getting help from experienced criminal defense attorneys who could aggressively defend against the charges, working to secure dismissals or favorable plea offers.
