How to avoid wintertime car accidents

While Georgia has a warm climate throughout most of the year, local winters can get snowy and icy. That's why it's important to take safety precautions both on and off the road. The Federal Highway Administration reports that 22 percent of car accidents every year are weather related. If more people winterize their vehicles and stay alert while driving, however, they could lessen the number of crashes during this dangerous season.

Winterization is simply the process whereby drivers make their vehicles ready for the winter weather. This includes checking the functionality of components like the brakes, wiper blades and defroster. In some regions, buying snow tires and chains is important as well. Drivers may also want to think about getting an emergency kit and an ice scraper or snow brush.

On the road, drivers should adjust their speeds because the faster they go, the greater the chance of wiping out. Drivers should look out for ice, even when freezing temperatures have recently ended, because it can make steering and braking difficult. Black ice makes the road look wet and usually develops under bridges and overpasses. No matter the situation, slamming on the brakes is never a good idea. A driver should keep a good distance from the car in front of them since braking distances increase on wet or icy roads.

When a car accident is the result of driver negligence, a victim could consult with a lawyer and see if they have the grounds for an injury claim. The lawyer may negotiate for a settlement with the other party's auto insurance company after building up proof of negligence.
