Highlighting the dangers of driving while impaired

Sadly, many families in Georgia have had to endure the harrowing experience of losing loved ones as a result of an automobile accident connected to alcohol. In 2016, it was estimated that 10,000 people died across the United States in automobile accidents connected to alcohol. This is a troubling pattern that must be reversed.

What makes alcohol-related automobile accidents tragic is that they could have been avoided in most cases. Driving impaired is a choice and should never be considered acceptable. Communities must be committed to making the right choice by educating and encouraging their residents to drive sober.

This was the message behind the proclamation made by the White House in which December 2017 was declared as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. Emphasis was placed on personal responsibility when deciding when to get behind the wheel of an automobile. Making the wrong choice can have an impact on pedestrians, passengers in the same vehicle and other drivers. By removing regulations, the administration plans to encourage American companies to innovate and create technology and services designed to minimize the incidences of driving under the influence.

Car accidents involving alcohol can leave their victims with severe injuries and, in some cases, result in fatalities. Personal injury lawyers may help their clients construct a case against the impaired driver. They might enlist the services of accident reconstructionists and other professionals in this regard. The attorney may work with the victim or their family to show that the impaired driver was negligent or failed to exercise their duty of care by opting to drive while impaired. The attorney may be able to help the victim or their family determine if they should accept an out-of-court settlement or if the matter should be pursued in court.
