MARTA and public safety

Because motor vehicle accidents are in the news constantly, it may seem as if taking public transportation is a safer way to go. Thousands of people in Atlanta do use the city's public transport system, MARTA, each and every day.

Although crashes do not occur nearly as often as they do on the highways, they can be more serious when they do happen. Not only that, you may face some risks when the bus or train is not even on the move.

If the driver of the passenger vehicle next to you loses control and veers off the road, you and a couple of other motorists may suffer injuries. However, when a bus driver has the same issue, it could send a crowd to the hospital. An example of this happened this fall when a bus driver had a medical event, according to WSB-TV Atlanta. The crash injured 20 people seriously enough to require medical care.

There is another danger you should be aware of before you use the transit system. According to The Atlanta Constitution-Journal, violent crime is a serious problem at MARTA stations.

Why have you not heard about this issue? Although the data tells a story of harassment, injuries and killings, it is rare for these incidents to make it on the news. Advocates of the system claim that the four homicides in four months are not a recurring problem, but isolated events.

It is true that these attacks broke a long homicide-free streak of about four fiscal years. However, in the 2016 fiscal year, there were 95 aggravated assaults and 52 robberies. While some of these occurred on MARTA property and on buses, the majority of the victims were using the rail system. These numbers represent a 13 percent drop from the 2015 fiscal year.

Whether your injury comes from the negligent security, a malfunction of a train or a bus crash, you may be able to seek compensation to cover your medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages. It may be in your best interest to speak to an attorney who works with these types of cases. A consultation may help you better understand your options for possible recourse.
