NHTSA campaign for holiday drunk driving begins

Georgia motorists know that getting behind the wheel after having had too much to drink is never a good idea. They may not know that around the country there were an average of 300 drunk driving accident fatalities between Christmas and New Year's Day every year for the last five years. To help reduce the numbers of drunk driving fatalities, the National Highway Traffic Safety Commission has started its annual Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over initiative.

Part of the campaign includes a commercial that is intended to raise the public's awareness of the problem. It is set at the scene of a drunk driving accident and shows a man sitting in the backseat of a police car. An app that allows a user to explore the scene of a drunk driving car accident was also released. Called SaferRide, it gives users a 360-degree experience and allows them to interact with the authorities, EMTs and victims.

During the holiday season, many people travel to spend time with friends and family. However, this often involves parties or gatherings where alcohol may be readily available. Additionally, the roads are often more dangerous during this time due to the weather and the added traffic. Being intoxicated exacerbates the issue.

Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a criminal offense. Even if no charges are filed, however, a person who has been injured in an auto accident caused by a drunk driver might want to meet with an attorney to discuss the advisability of seeking compensation through a civil lawsuit filed against the at-fault motorist. Damages often sought in these types of action include medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
