How stores can make for hazardous premises

Going to stores is a fact of life for many people, if not most. After all, you need food, clothes, gas and entertainment. Of course, you may have noticed that some establishments seem safer than others. For example, while ascending the staircase of a furniture shop, you might see that the stairs are uneven or cracked.

The fact is that some stores can be more hazardous than you realized, and there are many ways in which customers suffer injuries at the places they frequent often.

Slipping or tripping and falling

This is perhaps the most common and can happen from an uneven, slippery, cracked or broken ramp, floor, carpet, sidewalk or surface. Things to watch out for include leaks, debris, uneven curbs and warning signs (or their absence).

Falling goods

Many stores follow proper procedures when it comes to safe handling and storage of merchandise. Nevertheless, customers do sometimes suffer an injury from falling goods, especially at expansive stores where the norm is to stack or shelf items many feet up.

Negligent security

This one may not have crossed your mind, but stores and similar establishments such as restaurants have a responsibility to provide adequate security. That is, if a parking lot light is out and someone sustains an injury or attack, the store could possibly be partly at fault. The reverse situation can apply too. For example, if you are leaving a store and a security guard thinks you are shoplifting and attacks you, injuring you, that behavior could be overzealous and improper.

Lack of fire safeguards

If fires were to break out while you shop, you would hope that the store would have a good sprinkler system and smoke detectors and be up to fire code. You would also hope to be able to exit the store quickly and safely. Unfortunately, some stores make their fire exits inaccessible by stacking boxes there and making the premises unsafe in other ways for their employees and customers.
