Right-of-way laws to know

Georgia motorists should be aware of the right-of-way laws for the road. These traffic laws determine who is permitted to advance first in a wide range of driving circumstances. Drivers who are knowledgeable about these laws can avoid incurring an expensive traffic violation, making sure that their driving record is clear and their vehicle insurance rates are low.

Driving through a red light is a moving violation that occurs often and can result in vehicle accidents and injuries. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the running of red lights was the cause of 709 fatalities and injured almost 126,000 people in 2014. Over half of those people who were killed were people other than the driver who drove past the red light; the victims included other drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and passengers.

Drivers who run a red light in an area with high traffic may be charged with reckless driving. The danger of the driving behavior and the severity of the offense are factors that determine the type of legal consequences the negligent driver may face.

Another right-of-way rule of which drivers should be aware is what to do when emergency vehicles or buses are on the road. Drivers are required to pull over to the roadside as soon as possible if there is an emergency vehicle responding to an emergency. Drivers who are behind or at intersections with school buses that are unloading or loading school kids should stop an appropriate distance away and wait.

A personal injury attorney may pursue financial compensation for clients who have been injured in car accidents. Drivers who engage in negligent driving behavior, such as driving while distracted, drunk driving or texting and driving, may be held financially liable for pain and suffering, catastrophic injuries and medical expenses resulting from the accident.
