Changing drug laws could erase racial health disparities

Lowering drug penalties in Georgia and other states could reduce racial bias in the court system and also lead to reduced health disparities, according to a new study. The research was published in the American Journal of Public Health in June.

Police step up drug raids in Georgia

Police in one area of Georgia are escalating a campaign of arrests on drug charges with at least six arrests made in mid-June. In one raid, the police's Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit arrested three people; this was the fourth such drug raid in several days carried out by the police unit. Police officials announced that they were escalating enforcement activities related to the alleged use or sale of drugs.

Authorities take 3 into custody on drug charges

Three people were taken into custody after authorities raided Kingdom Kutz Barber Shop in Hiram, Georgia. The raid was the result of an investigation that lasted several months and resulted in search warrants being executed on April 4. Authorities found cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy as well as psilocybin mushrooms. They also found a .40 caliber semi-automatic gun, ammunition and accessories designed for use with weapons.

Elijah Holyfield charged with marijuana offense

College football fans might be interested in learning that Elijah Holyfield, the University of Georgia running back and the son of Evander Holyfield, has been charged with possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The incident happened in the early morning hours of May 1.
