3 steps to take after a bus accident

Accidents involving public transportation can result in serious consequences. In 2016, there were multiple accidents involving MARTA, including a fatal crash in October. Public transportation is a convenient way to get to work, go to the store or visit a friend, but bus accidents can have particularly tragic consequences because of the weight and size of busses and the number of passengers.

If you are involved in a public transportation accident, it is important to know what to do afterwards. Following the right steps can protect your wellbeing and help you collect evidence for a personal injury claim.

1. Get medical attention

After any type of motor vehicle crash, it is important to get medical attention immediately. Generally, the bus driver or other staff will call for assistance, but they may be seriously injured or killed or simply refuse to call emergency services. Under any of these circumstances, make sure you call 911.

It is important to get checked by a doctor even if you do not think you have severe injuries. Get tested for any head, back or spine injuries. These injuries might not show symptoms for days or weeks after the accident. Getting medical attention is crucial to catching injuries early for treatment and a potential lawsuit.

2. Document the scene

If you can move safely, do what you can to document the crash. You should try to get the names, mailing addresses, phone numbers and emails of the driver, passengers and witnesses. When law enforcement arrives, document the officer(s) name. If you have a camera or smartphone, take pictures of the scene from various angles.

Only get these details if you can move-do not surpass medical treatment to document the scene. If you are unable to document this information, most of it will be obtained by law enforcement, but it is useful and efficient to have your own information if possible.

3. Consult a lawyer

The laws and insurance details for public transportation accidents are different than auto accidents. Personal injury claims against large corporations or public entities are complex. When you file a claim, the insurance company will likely offer a low settlement. Before you make any decisions or attempt to navigate the legal complications on your own, it is smart to get assistance from a personal injury lawyer who deals with bus accidents.

If you got injured in a bus accident, contact an attorney for the best path to getting the compensation you deserve.
