How distracted driving impacts everyone

Georgia residents may be accustomed to seeing drivers on their cell phones as they pass by. Although using social media or sending text messages may seem normal these days, it is dangerous to do so while driving. The number of traffic fatalities increased from 2014 to 2015, which reversed a trend dating back to 2007. In 2016, it is believed that there were more traffic deaths than any other year since 2008.

Research has indicated that distracted driving might be a bigger threat than drunk driving. To stay safe, drivers may have to rethink what it means to drive defensively. Those who are defensive drivers assume that others will make mistakes while behind the wheel. This means that they need to be ready to overcome those errors. It is important to note that since a distracted driver cannot anticipate what is going on around them, they cannot be defensive drivers themselves.

To be a defensive driver, an individual must give his or her full attention to the road. For instance, if a driver comes to an intersection, he or she she cannot assume that it is safe to go through just because the light is green. Instead, that person must be aware that other drivers may be distracted and go through their own red light and into traffic.

Those who are injured in a car crash may be entitled to compensation for their injuries and other related costs. A car accident victim may need to prove that a negligent party caused the crash to occur. An attorney may point to cell phone records, toxicology reports or physical evidence from the crash scene in an effort to prove negligence.
